I see you. I know you are probably just like me, how I was. Staring at the mirror disappointed, unhappy, scared, and sad.

Weighing yourself each morning to see if you gained or lost. The number on the scale determining if you can eat today. If you are worthy of love, desire, connection, sex, or commitment.

How many diets have you tried? Paleo, keto, fasting, Atkins, Weight Watchers, vegetarian, calorie deficit, low carb, no carb. What about detoxes? Juice cleanses, teas, pills, laxatives?

Maybe you feel that if you could just find the motivation or dedication you could work hard enough to look like your dream body type.

I will tell you one of my secrets: I hired a good friend who is an amazing health coach to help me lose weight. I complained bitterly about how ‘nothing was working’. She helped me create a meal plan for the month and gave me the accountability I seriously needed. (Otherwise, hello Oreos for dinner!)

About a month in our program I hadn’t lost any weight and was feeling the same. Actually, I was feeling worse. What I hadn’t told her was that I was struggling with ulcerative colitis. That most foods caused me severe gut inflammation, bleeding, pain, and made me curl up in a ball.

I thought I was eating healthy! I mean, how does a salad make someone this sick??

But what was healthy for some people was devastating to my body.

My inability to successfully manage the colitis, the doctors who refused to help, and the dieticians who looked me in the eye and said “there is no proof that diet affects ulcerative colitis so there isn’t anything I can do for you” were my major blocks to 1. Healing 2. Losing weight.

How could I have ever lost any weight while my body was struggling to stay alive?!

What I know from working with thousands of women over the past 12+ years is that we are so overly consumed by our weight that we forget what is really happening.

 

I know better and I still fell into the trap!!

 

We think the symptoms we experience are normal, to be expected “for someone our age” (whatever that means) and that if we just ATE LESS AND EXERCISED MORE all our weight worries would go away.

That no one in the weight loss industry really understands that the majority of women struggle with serious issues that are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, untreated or mistreated, or told that there is nothing wrong when their bodies are screaming for help with:

  • Thyroid disorders: hypo, hyper, and autoimmune

  • Blood sugar imbalance: reactive hypoglycemia, prediabetes, diabetes type 1, 2, 2.5, and 3

  • Sleep disruption: insomnia, panic attacks, and fatigue

  • Anxiety and depression: medications are strongly liked to weight gain and difficulty losing

  • Histamine reactions: anti-histamines cause weight gain as well as mast cell disorders

  • Gut health: IBS, colitis, Crohns, celiac, autoimmune conditions

  • Inflammation: it can override any system at any time

  • Hormone imbalance: PMS, PCOS, estrogen dominance, infertility, low progesterone, testosterone imbalance

 

I can keep making this list forever and it doesn’t encompass all that needs to be addressed with one person's health.

Here is the truth: you can’t lose the weight you want to lose by chasing calories and exercise and ignoring what is going on with your real health.

Your weight is a number and nothing more.

I believe in body positivity. I believe that you can love yourself at any size.

I also believe (and the research shows) that having more weight on your body puts you at risk for diabetes, heart disease, cancer, hypertension, and arthritis.

Does this make you a bad person? NO!

Does this mean you have work ahead of you? YES!

I honestly hate talking about weight loss. It is always secondary to the work I do in functional medicine. I feel it is superficial compared to the actual issue, the symptoms you are facing, and the true health state of your physiology.

The TRUTH about weight loss:

 

It is absolutely NOT about calories in vs calories out. 

 

I have been seeing this everywhere and I can't stay silent about it any longer!

 

Please do not listen or take this to heart, because this information is not 100% true.

 

Yes, it may work every once in a while, but for the majority of the time, it is just a "quick fix" and doesn't work long term.

 

I hear my patients say "I went to my primary because I couldn't lose weight but they just told me to eat less and workout more" or they were put on serious weight loss drugs that cause more issues than cured. 

 

Sometimes calorie restriction works but for many people it does not. 

 

Most people overlook their serious health issues and think they should focus on weight loss instead. BUT their thyroid is shutting down, their gut health is horrible and the bloating and pain is out of control, and they are so tired and fatigued throughout the day there is no way they could ever lose weight. 

 

Enough is enough. You have to get down to the root cause of your health, address those underlying issues FIRST before jumping on a diet or quick fix.
